Collegiate Recruiting: What Coaches Are Looking For

College coaches don't look at every prospect the same way; but they do look for the same core qualities across the board. Understanding what those are can help you focus your training, highlight the right things in your profile, and recognize which programs might value you and what you bring to the table.

This isn't about becoming someone you're not. It's about understanding how coaches assess talent so you can show up authentically and find programs where your strengths align with what they need.

So without further ado… here are the Top 5 characteristics that coaches are looking for, as they evaluate potential team members:

1. Physicality and Athletic Potential

Coaches often start with raw attributes because they’re hard to teach:

  • Height and reach (especially for OH, MB, OPP)
  • Explosiveness (approach jump, block jump)
  • Lateral quickness and agility
  • Coordination and body control

2. Technical Skill and Position-Specific Competence

Coaches are also looking for repeatability; in other words, they want players who can execute the same skill at a high level under pressure. To try to predict this, coaches evaluate:

  • First contact consistency (serve receive, digging)
  • Arm swing mechanics and hitting efficiency
  • Blocking technique and reading ability
  • Setting location, tempo, and decision-making (for setters)
  • Serving pressure and variety

3. Volleyball IQ

Coaches love players who make the game easier for everyone else. This is the separator at higher levels:

  • Reading the game early (blockers reading setters, defenders reading hitters)
  • Smart shot selection
  • Understanding systems (5–1, 6–2, defensive schemes)
  • Transition discipline

4. Competitiveness and Coachability

This is where character shows up. Coaches will take a slightly less skilled player who is relentlessly coachable over a talented but difficult athlete.

Some signals that coaches will look for:

  • Body language after errors
  • Response to coaching
  • Communication on the court
  • Hustle plays (pursuits, covering hitters, chasing shanked balls)

5. Academic Fit and Reliability

GPA, course rigor, and test scores matter more than most players think. Coaches need athletes who:

  • Can get admitted
  • Can stay eligible
  • Won’t be a risk to the team culture

No recruit checks every box, and that's okay; coaches are building rosters of players whose skills and dispositions will complement each other, so the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. What matters is finding programs that will benefit from your unique combination of skills, character, and potential—and being honest about where you are in your development.

As you build your profile and connect with coaches, focus on showing these qualities authentically. The right program will see what you offer and want to help you develop. That's the fit worth finding.
