Personal Statement
The first time I taught a karate class, my hands shook more than they ever had during a match. I was fifteen, a black belt, and suddenly responsible for guiding students younger than me. That experience showed me that leadership isn’t about being the best—it’s about helping others grow.
Karate taught me discipline, patience, and consistency. Progress came from showing up every day, even when improvement felt slow. Those habits carried into my academics, where I learned to value curiosity and steady effort. Science, in particular, drew me in because understanding why matters as much as finding the right answer.
Teaching karate challenged me to communicate clearly and adapt to different learning styles. Some students needed repetition, others encouragement, but all needed someone who believed in them. Watching their confidence grow showed me that impact often comes from patience and consistency, not dramatic moments.
Serving as an altar boy has reinforced the importance of responsibility and humility. It’s a quiet role that requires reliability and respect, reminding me that being dependable matters even when no one is watching.
Volleyball shaped me in a different way. As a center, I learned the importance of trust and timing. Success depends on communication and awareness—knowing when to step up and when to support. Not every contribution is visible, but every role matters. Being part of a team taught me how individual effort connects to collective success.
These lessons are what draws me to medicine and research. I’m motivated by the combination of science and service—using knowledge to understand problems and help people. Research excites me because it rewards curiosity, precision, and persistence, qualities I’ve developed through both academics and athletics.
I see college as a place to grow intellectually and personally. I want to challenge myself, contribute meaningfully, and learn from diverse perspectives. Whether in a lab, on a court, or in a classroom, I bring the same mindset: stay curious, work hard, and support those around me.
